They certainly don’t make them like they used to. Old silent films have a quality about them that modern day movies do not. They require a keen intellect to enjoy properly. This is because they require you to still use part of your imagination while you are watching. This exercises different parts of your brain at the same time.

The General was considered by Buster Keaton to be one of his best movies. While the original run garnered criticism, later audiences and critics would agree that this was one of the best classics of the silent era.

With so many eyes on The Artist this year as a modern silent film, it might not be a bad idea to find free movie sites online and check out where such a success came from. Even Roger Ebert ranked Keaton’s The General in his top ten best movies of all time!

Watching free movies online is certainly a thing of the modern era, but the art of the movie dates back decades. If you’re interested in silent films since you saw The Artist or you just have a soft spot for old timey nostalgia and well made movies, I urge you to go to your favorite free movie sites online and watch some of Buster Keaton’s work.

Dancing to the Beat

Watching free movies onlineWatching free movies online is such a treat.  Every now and then – even when just searching randomly – you will find a very interesting movie about a random subject that might catch your interest or a movie that you can fully identify with.  You can put me in the latter camp with Universal Alchemy.

As someone who enjoys listening to rap music, respects the hip-hop community, and loves to dance, Universal Alchemy depicts a world that I am a part of and very much fond of.  In a nutshell, Universal Alchemy depicts a series of hip-hop dancers – known as breakdancers – showing off their routines in random city streets, subways, in front of buildings, and so on.  The video is set to a very fitting rap song with enough beats to make the dancing surreal and justifiably awesome.

Breakdancing was born out of the hip-hop culture with its vibrant beats and eccentric personalities.  Since its creation some decades ago breakdancing has found a home in other genres of music; as long as the tempo and beat is up to snuff, you can breakdance to the song as if it were almost any other rap song.

One of the joys of searching for and watching free movies online is finding movies like this.

The Right to Be Wrong

February 10th, 2012 | Posted by ChristineM in Documentaries - (0 Comments)

Do you ever see all the events reported on the news about people fighting over religion, race, gender, or a variety of other things that they let separate them and just think “why can’t we all get along?” Well the short film  ”The Right to Be Wrong” takes a look at modern Israel through the eyes of Christians, Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians, Jewish and Arab civilians. It’s about the story of a friendship between David and and Samir, one that seems unlikely but  has flourished over the years.

This documentary is the kind that will touch the heart and make people think about the differences they have with other people and ultimately, if they are worth it. You can’t change the thoughts of the entire world with one film, but you can certainly get some people to think a bit differently and those small changes are what really matters.

You can find “The Right to Be Wrong” in the documentary section of Festival of Films, with a ton of other free documentaries online. Some are just as touching as this one, some are more serious, others are more fun and they all cover a multitude of great topics. The next time you look for free movie sites online, check out documentaries on Festival of Films.

I’ll Believe You

February 9th, 2012 | Posted by orens in Cinema | Humor | Science Fiction - (0 Comments)

watching free movies onlineI’ll Believe You is a quirky, 2007 indie comedy about aliens and the people who are fascinated by them. The film centers around Dale Sweeney (played by David Alan Basche) as the host of a late night, call-in, radio program about aliens. The show has a devoted but very small audience. It looks like it is heading for cancellation until a strange call leads people to believe that an alien has made contract with the show. Suddenly Sweeney finds his show increasingly popular. So popular in fact that the FBI wants to know more about the extra-terrestrial.  Fans of aliens are sure to enjoy this when watching free movies online.

The film features many veteran comedies like Chris Elliot, Patrick Warburton (Puddy from Seinfeld) and Ed Helms and Mo Rocca from The Daily Show. The soundtrack also contains songs by The Hold Steady, The Fray and We are Scientists. This film may be low budget but there is a lot of talent on display.

The film is both hilarious and heartwarming. It is a celebration of small town life and the small, fringe community that exist all around us, from UFO enthusiast to participants in local radio. Many of these comedians have participated in community radio and this is one of the free new movies online that pays an earnest homage to that.

I watched Alfred Hitchcock’s “Foreign Correspondent” for the first time last night. This movie, which was made in 1940, has definite Hitchcockian touches, but appears somewhat unique compared to his other films, for its very pro-America, patriotic concluding scene. This may be due to the fact that last scene was written and filmed just five days before the Germans first bombed England, which as after the movie wrapped. watch free full movies online

The ending is propaganda, which does not seem at all like Hitchcock, but makes sense given the context of the time. And, the dialogue is so convincingly delivered that it does not feel hokey, even to to modern, jaded audiences. Certain Hitchcock trademarks are definitely apparent, however, such as his cameo early on in the movie.

The movie stars Joel McCrea as John Jones, a US newspaper reporter who stumbles onto a story of espionage while in London. In doing so, he also falls in love with Carol Fisher, who is played  by Laraine Day, and forms an alliance with Ffolliott, who is played by George Sanders. The entire cast is superb and sizzles together onscreen. George Sanders plays a roguish, but good guy, and elevates the performance of the already stellar actors.

Watching free movies onlineWhen watching free movies online, you might want to check out the science fiction psychological thriller Donnie Darko.  The title role is played by a young Jake Gyllenhaal.

Donnie is visited by a deranged looking man-sized rabbit and tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds.  Soon after, a jet engine with mysterious origins crashes into Donnie’s bedroom while he is outside.  The next day he meets Gretchen who is the love interest of the movie.  All the while the mysterious rabbit – named Frank – has been manipulating him into committing crimes.  Frank also tells him about time travel.

Sounds very weird huh?  Considering the strangeness of such movies what makes them appealing to moviegoers?  Simply put, we find them to be strangely fascinating.  To name a few, concepts like time travel, dementia, crime, and love are things we are aware of.  When a movie combines a number of these together in a unique and fascinating way, we are automatically drawn to it.  We like it when entertainment is different and engages us in a way we have yet to see before.  We enjoy having our minds being forced to think just a tad bit more than we usually do when watching typical action movies.

Donnie Darko is movie well worth taking the time to watch.  So search for free movie sites online and queue this movie now.

Free New Movies Online: Rain

February 3rd, 2012 | Posted by ChristineM in Cinema - (0 Comments)

Watching free movies online makes for some great entertainment. And if you are like me and are a lover of music and of drama films alike, there’s a great movie called Rain that you may like.  Based off the novel of the same name by famed author V.C. Andrews, it follows a musical prodigy as she works towards bettering her talent and making a name for herself musically, all the while dealing with a cloudy past. Raised by an African American family, she finds out that she’s actually the daughter of a white socialite who paid her step-family to raise her.

Novel to movie adaptations have become popular in recent times, but it’s nice to see a more classic story become a movie. It’s a truly emotional movie of a girl both dealing with her past, trying to accept her present, and using music to express herself the best she can as she goes through these confusing  times.

The movie is one of the many free new movies online at Festival of Films. It clocks in at an hour and forty one minutes, so make some time to watch this heart felt movie this weekend.

Thrills In Short Films Online

February 2nd, 2012 | Posted by TimD in Cinema | Suspense | Thriller | Web Videos - (0 Comments)

There is a distinct thrill in watching people seemingly defy the laws of physics or at the very least watch them bend those laws to their own needs and ends. Much of that thrill is likely from our sense that they may not succeed, not unlike a horror movie where the thrill is in figuring out what shocking ways bad things are going to happen to the lead characters. Of course unlike horror movies watching a person actually jump off of a cliff or attempt to land a harrowing trick on a skateboard is thrilling because that bad thing may in fact occur and also may in fact result in serious physical injury or death.

The Bodies In Motion section of the Festival of Films site this week features a wide variety of short films online, that capture the thrill of these kinds of stunts in interesting ways. On top of the cliff jumping and skateboarding videos there are the physical feats of a trained stunt man and a number of interesting videos of people dancing. Universal Alchemy shows some fantastic break dancing on the street in an eye popping fish-eyed lens.

All of these short films online are currently available for you to thrill to for free!

Spielberg Movie Trailers

February 1st, 2012 | Posted by orens in Cinema | Film - (0 Comments)

watch free full movies onlineIf anyone understands how to make a million dollar hit film, it’s Steven Spielberg. Spielberg ushered in the era or big movies, big merchandising contracts, and massive promotional campaigns. He worked in many genres but the same grandiosity is present in all of his films.

Jaws is a great example of the Spielberg’s genius. It also the film that proved to the film industry that they could spend a lot on a summer blockbuster but make it back tenfold with promotion and merchandising. The summer movies of today owe a great deal to Jaws. That is not to say Jaws doesn’t stand on its own as a thrilling and campy adventure.

Another classic Spielberg film is The Color Purple. This broadly appealing drama is arguably one of the most successful movies based off a book by a black, female author and staring a predominantly black cast.  Spielberg was able to take a book about the black female experience and make it palatable to mainstream moviegoers. This feat is not likely to be repeated considering most films now make the majority of their profits in the overseas markets which tend to not see movies marketed towards black America.

Knowing and watching Spielberg’s work is a good way to understand how the movie industry changed in the 1980s. Spielberg is strict about protecting his work so you cannot see his films on free movie sites online. There are no ways to watch free full movies online by Spielberg.
